Creating pathways between the brain and body to make communication accessible

About Spelling to Communicate

Spelling to Communicate (S2C) teaches individuals with motor challenges the purposeful motor skills necessary to point to letters to spell as an alternative means of communication (AAC). Current research suggests that those with autism and other sensory motor differences experience a "disconnect" between their brain and body, which makes most common forms of communication difficult. The goal is to build new motor pathways to help the brain and body work together and make communication more accessible for nonspeakers.

Most common forms of communication require complex fine motor movements, including speech, sign language, writing, and typing. These types of fine motor skills are particularly challenging for individuals with sensory-motor differences, which is why communication is often out of reach. With S2C, we address this issue by taking communication out of fine motor. By pointing to letters on a board, individuals are able to use gross motor (the larger muscles of the arm) to communicate. As motor control improves, they can begin to express their own thoughts and ideas, leading to more autonomy and independence.

All communication requires motor.

Who can benefit?

Nonspeakers

A person who is little to no speaking has very limited speech. They may or may not be able to produce a small number or words and struggle to communicate using speech.

Minimal Speakers

A person who is minimally speaking may be able to use some speech to produce a number of words or phrases but do not have enough speech for robust and flexible communication.

Unreliable Speakers

A person who is unreliably speaking may have the ability to speak, but is not always able to access their speech intentionally or communicatively.

If there is a nonspeaker, a minimal speaker, or an unreliable speaker in your life and you are interested in learning more about S2C services, please contact us to set up a free 30 minute phone call or online meeting. We look forward to meeting you!
